Measles outbreak in Congo, More Than 400 People Died

Outbreaks of measles that attacked the Democratic Republic of Congo since the beginning of the year has not yet subsided. Data from the United Nations (UN) said that there are already more than 400 people died with a total of approximately 30,000 patients infected people.

More than 100 deaths and 10,000 new cases occurred in August. While the UN claims to have disbursed approximately USD 32 billion to overcome this plague.

However, many people who think the money is not enough. Poor road access, inadequate health facilities and a lack of public interest in vaccinating an obstacle to the completion of this outbreak.

"This disease is still growing, especially in areas with active mine sites," said Yvon Edoumou, spokesman of the UN representative in Congo, told Reuters on Sunday (18/10/2015).

Outbreak which began in January 2015 is predicted to be the worst measles outbreak that had attacked the Congo. Even worse than the outbreak that occurred in 2010-2011, in which 1,085 people confirmed dead and more than 77,000 are infected.

Measles itself is a dangerous infectious disease. If not treated, and coupled with a lack of water or poor sanitation, measles can progress to acute diarrhea, dehydration, respiratory disorders to brain inflammation.
